The Rolling Prairies
11"x 14" oil pastel on 90lb. fine art paper

This piece was created while on a trip through the heart of the central Canadian prairies. The combination of the sweltering heat and revitalizing air conditioning ,of my means of transportation, created very interesting conditions for working with this medium. Resulting in unique textures and movements within the work. Much like the real life prairies themselves.

The prairies conjure up so many thoughts and visuals. Much, I dare say as any other sight of beauty this earth has to offer us. The prairies feel, to me, to be one of the only place where, life and death are so evident. Where the balance of making it or breaking it become a reality.

If you've ever read stories of the great depression you know what I am trying to convey here. The prairies have a rich history of resilience and life. People who lived through desperate times and then times of great abundance. Families and neighbors who clung together at the mercy of the weather or pestilence...sometimes both.

Again, maybe this takes me back to the stories I heard, in and around grandma and grandpas kitchen and sitting room. Read more here.
